Tustin Glider Fly - November 22, 2009

Glider fans,

Since I was an observer at the record trials yesterday in Santa Ana and am still really pumped I felt I would share some of my thoughts concerning Stan's performance. Thanks to Lee H. for introducing me  to this site.

Cat performance: From past experience I know how difficult it is to contain an indoor glider within any site yet Stan was able to consistently place the roll out of that small glider in line with and 2-5 feet below the top longitudinal roof girder every time. 157 ft.+- above the floor. He did not have 2 lucky flights, all of the times were very consistent. Considering all of the variables going into a cat. launch I thought Stan showed remarkable form. I heard the "he is a machine" phrase several times and that was right on.

HLG performance: For some reason I didn't expect Stan to do much with this event since he already claimed the record some months previous. He chucked up a few test flights doing 1:20 or so each time with little effort. Stan then started an official series and times started in the mid 1:30's and went up from there. The 1:39 flights became ho hum and everyone was rooting him on to eliminate the 1 or 2 small stalls at the top. Stan continued to make small adjustments, less tip weight, a little more skew to tighten turn, etc. All of the time he announced what he was doing. The launches and flight pattern were so consistent that the total time could almost be judged as to where the model was landing in comparison to the middle line in the concrete floor. The 1:43.8 flight landed way beyond the middle line and has been recorded on video and will be posted soon for all to enjoy (see below).

The performance was amazing almost not to be believed. I guess it really hasn't sunk in yet.
